languages_for-geopointeThis morning we had the opportunity present our latest parent info session on the topic of language acquisition.  It was excited to see a strong turnout of families representing many different grades and nationalities.  We want say an extra special thank you to everyone who set aside the time to be with us this morning.

For individuals who were unable to attend, we have included a link to the presentation slides.  Additionally, we have also embedded a video in this post that was created by a fellow international school.  The video highlights the importance of supporting the continued development of the “mother tongue” for students who attend international schools where the primary language of instruction is not their first language.

As always, our goal at BFIS is to honor the unique qualities of every child and implement research-based instructional strategies to maximize every student’s potential.  We hope you will find this information helpful and we look forward to continuing to support your children in their language journey!

Learning vocabulary is fun!

Written by marionall. Posted in 1st Grade SAL, Kindergarten SAL, SAL

Students from Kindergarten and 1st grade who take SAL lessons are currently discovering new vocabulary in Spanish.

According to the arrival of Autumn season, we have been working on some material related to this season as well as we learned some songs that we love to sing. Find the link and the lyrics below so we can all sing together:

Spanish in Kinder/1st Grade

Written by Maria Guttierez. Posted in 1st Grade SAL, ES CSCS, Kindergarten SAL, SAL

Our SAL students have started the year learning different songs about some topics that we repeat every day. Our routine starts with the song “Buenos días”, we continue doing the calendar, speaking about the weather and singing the days of the week. After that, we read a story related to the topics that we are going to work on during our class. We have also been working on the colors and we are learning the letters and the sounds in Spanish.

This week, we have introduced vocabulary related to Fall. Students are developing their oral skills and they share their ideas in the class. We are talking about the main colors in Fall (orange, brown, yellow and red), typical food that we eat during this time and the clothes that we use in this season.

In the coming weeks we will start explaining some traditions that we celebrate in October: La Castañada and Halloween. We will sing “La Castañera” and we will get to know a little bit more about this Catalan celebration.

Learning Spanish is fun

Kindergarten and 1st grade students from SAL are having their first approach to Spanish. Through songs, games and worksheets we have been working on different topics.

Our sessions have a routine that consists on reading a book sitting on a circle, doing the calendar and presenting what we will work during class time.

During these past weeks we have introduced basic vocabulary related to the days of the week, colors and numbers.

Our main goal is to make students feel relaxed when using Spanish, to introduce to them some expressions and words that can be useful and to encourage them to use this foreign language when speaking.

We are very happy to work together and we are looking forward to showing you our progress!

Writing unit: “Barcelona, the city where I live in”

Written by marionall. Posted in 1st Grade SAL, ES CSCS, Kindergarten SAL, SAL

Kindergarten and 1st grade SAL’ students are about to begin a writing unit about “Barcelona”. As they have been working on some of the most important buildings in the city with their lead teachers, we thought this could be a very convenient occasion to work deeply on this subject.

Students are asked to recover some of the contents they have been working on previously and to amplify them with this unit. After taking a look into our pupils’ previous knowledge and their interests, we read a book about the city and discovered some places and touristic attractions that our city offers such as: Montjuïc fountain, the Aquarium, the tiles from the streets designed by Antoni Gaudí, etc.

We will be learning more about our city and will create our own project about it. Be aware, we will be updating our progresses soon!

We love animals

Written by Maria Guttierez. Posted in 1st Grade SAL, ES CSCS, Kindergarten SAL, SAL

Elefantes, leones, gorilas, vacas, caballos, delfines… We are learning about animals! We are talking about the place where they live, their parts and what they can do. Every day, we have read a story related to this topic and we have shared some ideas. Our students had fun singing the song La vaca lechera and practicing the vocabulary. We are also practicing the writing: children started to write short words in Spanish and we are making connections between the sounds and the letters.
