Castellano 3º, “Orión y los animales magos”

Written by Carmela Gil. Posted in 4th Grade Català, Castellano, ES CSCS

Written by Carmen Anido. Posted in 4th Grade Català

Català 4t, Escriure i escriure!

Written by Carmela Gil. Posted in 4th Grade Català, ES CSCS

We are Journalists!

Written by Núria Araguas. Posted in 4th Grade Català, 4th-5th Grade Advanced SAL, SAL

Our fourth and fifth graders are ready to continue developing their Spanish skills while having fun and immersing in a very rich culture.

We started the new school year by introducing each other, reviewing some vocabulary related with personal adjectives. By the time we finished our first unit, our students were able not only to speak about their daily activities and hobbies, but also to interview their friends about their likes and dislikes and to report that information, speaking about a third person. In order to speak about their daily agendas and hobbies, our students were using the present continuous tense in context and applying different pronouns.

On the other hand, we have been working on weather conditions and natural disasters, reading and listening to different documentaries and reports. In order to practice this academic vocabulary  in context, each student has prepared a script for a news program. They have chosen a natural disaster and a country of their interest and then recorded some videos pretending they were journalists broadcasting.  It has been very enriching to listen to their oral presentations about Japan, United States or Africa, among others. They have learned about important natural disasters that happened, for instance, in Haiti recently. Do not hesitate to contact me in case you would like to have a look at their amazing videos!

Castellano 1º

Written by Carmen Anido. Posted in 4th Grade Català

Spanish Catalan Studies in Third Grade

Written by Núria Araguas. Posted in 4th Grade Català

Discovering and exploring the place and the culture we all live in is a great way to make our students feel at home. Spanish Catalan Studies is an entertaining CLIL subject designed with this purpose in mind. The main objective is to give students the opportunity to broaden and consolidate their linguistic skills while simultaneously acquiring a better understanding of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries.

In third grade, we are going to focus on famous characters: we will be learning about architects, painters, writers, chefs, athletes and cartoons.

We started this journey by learning about two important architects for the city of Barcelona. We first spoke about Ildefons Cerdà, the urban planner who designed the 19th-century extension of Barcelona called the Eixample. We observed this district on the map, being able to locate some of the landmarks of Barcelona. Afterwards, we were discovering Gaudí’s life and work; we read and listened about his biography, we studied his most emblematic buildings and creations and then we wrote about the Güell Park and crafted Gaudí’s lizard applying one of his most famous techniques, “trencadís”. We also wrote about Sagrada Familia, using acquired facts for an “all about” text. Finally, we were inspired by a mapping video on “Casa Batlló” and then drew our own interpretation of this original house.

We are now studying some representative painters from Spain and Mexico. We read about Diego Velázquez and observed some of his masterpieces. We then watched an audio guide video that helped us interpret better his most important painting, Las Meninas (The Ladies-in-Waiting). After having contextualized the author and this painting, we were ready to complete a collaborative piece of writing about all these facts and to use watercolors to recreate his masterpiece.

We continued our trip by learning about the life and work of another important painter, Francisco de Goya. We spoke about the Prado Museum, in Madrid, and how these painters can be found in the Prado collection.

We are now thrilled and ready to continue learning about other artists!
