We are greatly looking forward to our Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. In response to questions from parents in the past about the format of conferences, we have created this FAQ document in order to provide further context and rationale. If you have any questions about the sign up process, please feel free to contact Caroline Rockett (caroliner@bfischool.org,) the administrative assistant of ES.

Next week: MAP Testing

Next week, students in 3rd , 4th and 5th grade will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®). We give students MAP tests to have an external measure of each child’s growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, and Language Usage.  Your child will take these tests on a computer.

MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. Your child will spend a total of about three hours over the course of three separate days completing these tests. Each school year, students in 3rd Grade through 10th Grade take the tests in around the beginning of fall and the beginning of spring. Following each testing period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth.

Supporting the transition of our newest community members

Written by Lila Jorge. Posted in Administration, Elementary School, ES Counselor, ES Principal

new life old lifeThis morning Ms. Maeyama and I had the pleasure of presenting to over a dozen families who are new to the BFIS community. The focus of the presentation was to share our experience witnessing hundreds of students transition into our community and also information related to the various phases of cultural adaptation.

As alway, our goal was to emphasize the importance of valuing each child’s unique transition journey and highlight the fact that many parents are also adjusting to a big life change.  There is no doubt that deciding to move to a new school, and possibly new country, is an incredible opportunity.  At the same time, change always comes in tandem with different challenges and our aim is to make sure that every family in the community feels supported along the way.

While the transition of every child and family is unique, we recognize that coming to a new school/city/country is a significant change that, at times, can be quite challenging.  For this reason, we want to do our best to support families by sharing our knowledge and experience from having witnessed hundreds and hundreds of individuals navigate this situation.
On Tuesday, September 22, Mr. Duval and Ms. Maeyama will be holding a Parent Workshop ?en?titled, “What to expect during an international school transition”. This workshop will cover topics such as a framework for understanding the different stages of transition to a new community, information about the process of language acquisition, and how these concepts are related child’s academic and social development adjustment to the community.
