Reflections from the Head of School

Written by Colin Boudreau. Posted in Administration, Head of School

Greetings, BFIS Community!

Welcome to the first posting of Reflections from the Head of School, a channel for me to share news, thoughts, and insights about BFIS, and a place to celebrate our successes and address our challenges.

As many of you know, BFIS was recently included in El Mundo’s Annual Ranking of Schools edition, so it seems a good opportunity to consider what sets BFIS apart from other schools in Barcelona. Each morning I’m greeted by child after child who is excited to be coming to school, but what is it that makes this such a special place? For many of you who know this school so well, what I am about to write may strike you as my stating the obvious, but I think it’s important to stop from time to time to reflect on where we are as we look forward to where we want to go as a school.

BFIS was founded in 1986 with the very clear vision to be “a school which embraces the best of American education within an international environment.” That ideal of being an American International school continues today. Our enrollment is built upon a target student balance of 1/3 American , 1/3 local, and 1/3 international. Our curriculum is aligned to American standards, yet we also prepare our students for the challenges of the International Baccalaureate program.

Beyond the curriculum, BFIS is grounded in the philosophy and spirit of a liberal arts education at its best – a progressive, student-centered, differentiated approach that fosters critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration; values curiosity, perseverance, and hard work; and focuses on the balanced intellectual, social, and emotional development of children. Our dedicated faculty care about students, nurture their growth, and are committed to supporting their development in various aspects of their lives.

Finally, as so many people regularly observe, at the center of BFIS is its strong feeling of community. The partnership between families and the school is an essential element in our students’ education. As our mission states, Our purpose is to engage our diverse school community in the pursuit of educational excellence and success for all students. The engagement of all members of our community is crucial to our success as a school and to the growth of our students, and it forms the basis of all we do.

“Hiking” the Pyrenees

Written by Núria Araguas. Posted in Spanish-Catalan Studies

The Pyrenees are the mountainous crown of Catalonia and one of the most important geographic landmarks. Therefore, our 4th and 5th  Spanish Catalan Studies students were studying some of the natural parks and reserves to be found in the Pyrenees. Some examples are La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone or the Núria Valley.

We were visualizing pictures and videos, reading and learning about all these natural reserves. Then, students elaborated a synoptic chart summarizing key information about the parks. We also explored activities and possibilities that all these zones have to offer to visitors, as well as some of the ski stations.

Ready to go hike in the mountains!
