We celebrated Halloween BIG this year.  First grade had a fun, interactive party in the classroom.  We played spooky bingo, made
a spider lollipop, decorated cookies, carved a jack-o-lantern, put
our hands into creepy noodles for prizes and played a bean bag toss game with a scary skeleton and a freaky Frankenstein. To top it off
we ate lots of sweets and goodies!  Then we were off to the
elementary Halloween parade.  Thanks to all the parent  volunteers
and all the goodies sent in!

Student Parent Teacher Conferences

Written by Paul Fulce. Posted in MS/HS Principal

Each year, we set aside two days for students to spend time with their parents and teachers together to discuss course goals, student accomplishments, and teacher concerns. (Private conferences are available throughout the year after direct communication with the teacher and parent concerned.)

Official conference dates for 2013-14 are:

Monday, November 18, 2013       (online booking system opens Mon Nov. 11)

Monday, March 17, 2014 (online booking system opens Mon Mar. 10)

One week ahead of the conference, parents may visit the webpage to schedule ten minute appointments with any teacher they desire to meet.  (Verify teacher names with your child beforehand.) There is a five minute window between each appointment.  Parents may also schedule appointments with Mrs. Makey (IB Coordinator), Mr. Trainor (HS Counselor),  or Mr. Fulce (MS/HS Principal).

A confirmation email will be sent to the parent’s inbox.

Students must be present at the conferences in order to maximize their value.  If the parent wishes to confer with the teacher privately, the parent should let the teacher know at some point and the student will be excused at an appropriate point.

Please honor your scheduled time and recognize that many parents and students wish to see the teacher during this day.  Please arrive promptly and depart punctually in order to allow the day to flow easily.

If you have questions, please contact marthac@bfischool.org or paulf@bfischool.org

Homelink 6: Odd and even

Written by ValerieW. Posted in 2nd Grade

Dear Parents,

This week we’re thinking about

Showing if a number is odd or even

In class this week, we are working on whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members.  We can do this by pairing objects or counting them by 2s.  We are also working on writing an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.  Our learning targets are:

  • I can identify a group of objects as being even or odd using different strategies.
  • I can write an equation to show an even sum has the same addends (e.g., 5 + 5 = 10, 6 + 6 = 12).
  • Addends are the numbers that add up to the sum (total)

Get ready to explain your thinking and your math strategies!

For  second graders, explaining your thinking is the HARDEST part!!   Here is where you can really help your child by lending an ear, and helping them to verbalize the wonderful ideas that are inside their heads.
